Install Claude Code on a Mac
Get Claude Code running on your Mac before you do anything else.
Who this is for
Anyone new to BTT who needs to use Claude Code on their laptop. Time needed: about 15 minutes. Do this first -- every other SOP assumes Claude Code is already installed.
What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is an app that lets you have a conversation with Claude (an AI assistant) and have it actually do work on your computer: write emails, edit websites, look up data, post on social. You type or talk to it, it does the task. You will use Claude Code every day at BTT.
Before you start
- A BTT laptop (Mac)
- Your BTT email address login
- Admin access to install apps (ask Chris if you do not have it)
You do not need to know any code.
Step 1 - Download Claude
- Open Safari or Chrome.
- Go to:
https://claude.com/download - Click the big Download for Mac button.
- A file called something like
Claude.dmgwill land in your Downloads folder.
Step 2 - Install Claude
- Open your Downloads folder.
- Double-click the Claude.dmg file.
- A window opens showing the Claude icon. Drag the Claude icon into the Applications folder.
- Wait a few seconds while it copies, then close the installer window.
Step 3 - Open Claude for the first time
- Open Spotlight by pressing Cmd + Space.
- Type
claudeand press Enter. - Mac may ask: Are you sure you want to open this? -- click Open.
Step 4 - Sign in

- Choose Continue with Google.
- Sign in with your @bristechtonic.co.uk Google account.
- Click Allow on any permission prompts.
Step 5 - Allow Claude to control your computer (optional but useful)
Claude can open apps, click buttons, and use your browser if you grant the following permissions.
- When Claude asks for permission, click Allow.
- Mac will open System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Find Accessibility and Screen Recording in the list.
- Toggle Claude ON in both lists. You may need to enter your Mac password.
If you skip this step Claude still works -- it just cannot click around for you. You can return to System Settings > Privacy & Security to enable it later.
Step 6 - Test it works
In the Claude window, type:
Hello! Please tell me what you can do.
Press Enter. Claude should reply with a list of what it can help with. If you get a reply, you are done.
