What Page Speed Means For SEO
The short version
Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor. A slow website will be penalised compared to a fast one, all else being equal. Beyond rankings, speed directly affects whether visitors stay or leave before the page loads.
How Google measures speed
Google uses Core Web Vitals to assess page speed and user experience:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): How long until the main content is visible. Should be under 2.5 seconds.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): How much the page jumps while loading.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): How quickly the page responds when clicked.
What causes slow pages
Common culprits: large uncompressed images, too many third-party scripts, heavy page builders, unoptimised fonts, and slow hosting.
