Why Keyword Rankings Aren't The Whole Story
Rankings matter — but they're not everything
Keyword rankings are a useful directional indicator. But treating them as the primary measure of SEO success creates problems.
The personalisation problem
Google personalises results based on your location, search history, and device. If you search for your own business, you'll likely see yourself ranking higher than a typical new customer would. Position tracking tools use neutral, anonymised searches for accuracy.
Rankings without traffic mean little
You can rank on page one for a keyword nobody searches for. A position 3 ranking for a term with 1,000 monthly searches is worth far more than position 1 for a term with 20.
The AI search factor
Google increasingly answers questions directly in AI Overviews and featured snippets. A site can rank highly but receive fewer clicks because the answer appeared directly in search. This is why we track impressions and clicks alongside rankings.
